The assignment:
De-digitization
For this assignment we were tasked with “de-digitizing” an app. My team used the clock app as our basis.
Some sort of alarm system that wouldn’t be as jarring as a sudden, loud chime.
We took inspiration from products such as Hatch, an alarm clock that focuses on healthy rising.
For the form, we took inspiration from artist James Turrell, who uses light and colors to provoke emotion.
We wanted out product to feel not only like an alarm, but as a piece of art. Something to be admired.
Design Iterations
We knew that we wanted a lamp. One that changed brightness to wake you up like the sun.
The Eclipse lamp was designed to be a customizable experience to help keep a healthy sleep cycle and schedule.
After being set up, the clock will shift colors and dim as it gets closer to the end of your day. When the times you set come up, Eclipse will chime to let you know.
Designed to mimic the rising and setting of the sun, Eclipse’s lights will change and dim through the day.
Day Lights
During the day, the light emitted from the LEDs mimics the bright yellow hues the sun offers.
Night Lights
During the night, the LEDs emit warm blue hues. The blues mimic the blue tone of night while using warm blues to encourage relaxation and sleep.
Setting Lights
The two smallest circles turn with LEDs showing the location of the hand on a clock face.
